I am sharing our experience in hopes that it helps another family make an informed decision when choosing a memory care or assisted living facility for a loved one with dementia. I am sharing our experience in hopes that it helps another family make an informed decision when choosing a memory care or assisted living facility for a loved one with dementia. In our experience, this was not a place I would recommend for someone with advancing dementia or significant behavioral needs. Families should ask very specific questions about dementia care, medication management, care plans, communication, and whether the facility truly provides age-in-place care as dementia progresses. I also strongly recommend asking whether the community has access to a geriatric psychiatrist or other specialists who can help manage complex dementia behaviors and medications. Our family experienced very little communication until we were given a 30-day notice to move our loved one. We were then faced with an incident that resulted in her being sent to the hospital. We never received the full details we felt we needed to understand what had happened. From there, she was transferred to a geriatric psychiatric facility and ultimately to another memory care community. Within a month, we saw a devastating decline. She became almost nonverbal and stopped eating. We will always wonder how much of this rapid decline was related to the tremendous stress of the transition and the disruption in her care and medication management. From our family’s perspective, the experience was heartbreaking. I do want to say that there are genuinely kind and caring people who work there. We met staff members who had good hearts and clearly cared about the residents. But good individual caregivers do not necessarily make a facility the right fit for someone with advanced dementia. Looking back, I wish we had been told more clearly what could happen when our loved one’s dementia progressed and what level of care the facility was actually equipped to provide. Please ask the difficult questions before choosing a facility. Don’t just ask whether they accept residents with dementia—ask what happens when the dementia becomes more advanced, behaviors develop, medications need to be adjusted, or the resident can no longer safely remain there. Our loved ones deserve a place that is prepared to care for them through the progression of this devastating disease. I hope sharing our experience helps another family avoid going through what ours did.

Preston Place 2 is simply the best! The staff brings the perfect combination of professionalism, understanding, knowledge, and sincere loving to all their residents. The facilities are excellent, comfortable, and just right for the residents’ needs. We are forever thankful for their loving care of my Mom. PP2 was such a blessing to our family. 💜

We moved my dad to Preston Place 2 on Friday Oct. 24th, 2025. He has received Wonderful care. I am so thankful for all the staff. The staff there cared for my mother for over a year. To say that they treated her as their own is a huge understatement. From the first day she was there I never worried for one second that she wasn’t being treated like a queen. They have many daily activities and engaging things from painting to milk and cookies and movies with popcorn. I can’t thank them enough for making her last year undeniably one of her best.

My father has been a resident for several years at Preston Place II since being diagnosed with Alzheimer's . The staff is very knowledgeable and caring. They work constantly to have activities and special events for the residents. The meals are very good and nutritious, and overall the nursing staff is excellent. We feel grateful there is such a facility in Kingsport. We always feel welcome spending time there and are very pleased with his care.

I’m so thankful that we found Preston Place ll for mom! She has made friends with the residents and staff and has made it her home.

Finding a new home for my mother as she declined mentally was very difficult. What we have experienced in the two and a half years she has been at PP2 has been exactly what we need. In a facility where memory loss and de line is the common denominator, mom has found friends, joins in daily activities, is content with this being ‘home’. Staff is communicative and always helpful, this is paramount since I am not local. I recommend this facility anyone who is looking for a safe, caring place for someone they love.
