My mother is an Alzheimer’s/dementia patient and was in the memory care unit at Christian Assisted Living for around 9 months. Our family was told that the mental hospital was likely to release her right back to assisted living the very next day. That did not happen. My mother is an Alzheimer’s/dementia patient and was in the memory care unit at Christian Assisted Living for around 9 months. After she had only been a resident at CAL for about 3 weeks, staff sent her to the local psychiatric hospital after an incident in which they interpreted her behavior to be threatening. Our family was told that the mental hospital was likely to release her right back to assisted living the very next day. That did not happen. They kept her there for TWO weeks, saying that they just needed to adjust her medication so that my mom would be more “easily redirected.” By the end of her stay at the psychiatric hospital, my mother was on 7 hard drugs, one of which was Risperdol, which carries a black box warning by the FDA because it carries significant mortality risk. She was put on this drug nevertheless. If this entire event weren’t tragic enough, we were later told that my mom simply had a urinary tract infection which was likely the cause of her acting in an agitated manner in the first place, meaning that the action they took by calling an ambulance and her resulting hospital stay in which they “treated” her behavior by putting her on antipsychotic meds could have been completely unwarranted. Before transferring her to the hospital, the people at CAL made two feeble attempts to alert a family member, but since it was late at night, they weren’t successful in that attempt, so we were not informed until the next day. The entire event was poorly handled and resulted in the steep decline of my mom’s physical health. She was never the same after that 2-week hospital stay. She did return to CAL after that and stayed for another 6 months or so until she declined to the point that she needed to be moved to nursing home care. The CNA’s are wonderful there; they consistently take patient and loving care of the residents, but the directors and people who make decisions regarding procedures in the handling of your loved one (and communication of said decisions) leave a lot to be desired.
From the moment we walked through the doors, we knew this was a special place. The staff is incredibly welcoming, kind, and attentive, always going above and beyond to meet each resident's needs with compassion and respect. Their professionalism and genuine care provide real peace of mind. What stands out most is the sense of warmth and community—it truly feels like home. We are so grateful to have found a place where our loved one is not only well cared for but also valued and treated like family.
Admin instructed workers not to bring a tray of food/drink to my mom when she was in her room even though she was eating and drinking well. Admin pushed her out of the facility with no plan of transition and without sufficient notice.. Communication became very poor and there was no documentation provided regarding the changes in her care. My dad was told that if he didn’t get my mom moved by the weekend, they would send her to the ER. It seemed impossible to move her that quickly but also it felt imperative if we didn’t they would either not assist with food/water or would call the EMS and…

Unbelievably disappointed they would treat residents and their families this way. We really loved the CNAs that provided care to my mom- they really care about the residents However, I would not recommend the memory care portion because of how my mom with Alzheimer’s was treated.
It is not easy to place a loved one into Assisted Living, but if you need that kind of help, Christian Assisted Living of Johnson City is a great place to start. The management and staff are both wonderful, and I am sure they will take care of my wife well. I'd like to thank everyone there for their help and care with my wife. Chambless Johnston
The entire staff is amazing. Their patience and understanding with my mother, who has dementia, knows no limits! If I could leave five stars for individual staff, Shelly, Amie, Taylor, Treva, Tracy, Daniel, Beth, and any others all deserve a 10!
My nephew had a temporary stay at Christian Assisted Living due to his diabetes. They taught him how to test and manage his diabetes. His room was comfortable and clean. The entire staff were wonderful and terrific residents.
Everything about Christian Assisted living has been great, but the most important is the staff. I have not met one person who has not been sincere about my mothers well being and comfort. Communication is great, and any small issue or concern that arises is addressed immediately. All residents are treated with respect, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Cleanliness is exceptional.
My mother in law loved this place because of several reasons. Jessica and Thomas two Nurses, which made her so happy. These two Nurses always made my mom feel so special and made her life so happy. Jessica and Thomas was always bringing her coffee, buying her shoes and doing special favors for her that was not even something that they did not have to do, but took the time and effort to make mom’s life and make her feel so special and happy. Regina who helped her get ready in the mornings and was very good to my mother in law. There was a couple of more that I wish I knew there names…. I am so sorry that I don’t know there names. But, I will have to let you know about a few things that none of the family members were happy about and things that happened that should not have occurred. There was always a big turn over there. Never could keep employees. The office staff was the most issues that we had a problem with. There were so many times that we had to clean our mother’s bathroom and room. We were told and it says in the contract they clean or light clean each week. That never occurred and we had to call the office staff constantly to ask them to clean mom’s room. We also heard complaints from staff members and patients who have lived there for years about the situation they had since living there. The staff member’s tried to get between my mother in law, myself and my wife. We understood that each time there was a turn over that we had to start all over again because of someone new being hired. Above all….I will have to say that we were not that unhappy about things that were happening and going on in the facility. For the most part we were happy and my mother loved it there. One last thing that I would like to say that really upset the Family more than anything this Facility done to our mother and to our Family!!!!!! My mother passed away in the Hospital and there was one Staff member that came to our mother’s room to see her…..we had no idea that she was going to pass. When Kim Meadows came to our mother’s rooms she stayed about a minute or less and the only thing she came for was to let us know that if our mother was going to rehab when she gets out of the hospital that they have Abundant Christian Living that she could go too. But my mother passed away and not one person that worked in the Director’s Department office’s sent a card, called a Family Member or sent flowers to let the Family know how sorry they were. Jessica came to the Funeral, Thomas called us and a few of the patients came up to us and Amy the head of nursing said they were sorry when we went to clean mother’s apartment out. But, not one of the Office Staff said or even acknowledged that my mother even lived there. Even when we talked to Steven who is a receptionist, who answers the phone, he never said a word about my mother or said how sorry he was that my mother had passed… after me saying I would bring a key back to him. Oh one more thing that I would like to let you know….. My mother dressed very nice and had a nice apartment. We left my mother’s electric lift chair for them to give to someone there and left a Portable Potty for them to give to someone who needed one. Plus all of my mother’s nice clothes and brand new shoes that my wife just bought her. Several new Skechers shoes that she never got to wear. So many things that my mother would have been so proud that we had done and left for the Friends and Families that she had met and knew. We were so happy that we could do this for them. We never received a thank you card from any of the Director Staff for any kindness that we loved doing for the community that lived in there. I hope that it all went to the patients that lived there and it helped a lot of people there. Jessica, Thomas and Regina and a little Blonde headed girl that gave mother her baths when she took one…..sorry I don’t remember your name. She loved you all so much! Thank you for being so kind, thoughtful, caring and loving to my mother. We miss her so much.
